Yup, I Do! re TOY Awards

After reading the comments below "The Winner Is In...Do You Own Any? about Toy Of The Year Awards, I'd like to tell you my own experience with the illustrious Zhu Zhu pets. First, I was annoyed with the supply-demand hoopla the company was creating.
Shipments were limited in number and quantity, even to big box stores. Then, I witnessed the ebay sellers buying caseloads of pets as they arrived on trucks at Walmart...finding out they stalked each store as deliveries were unloaded after midnight. Purchased at $8 apiece, they resold at.totally outrageous prices. I was disgusted at this, and refused to participate in the mania. But they were so cute...
But they were for kids...How could people do this?

Vacillating, but unwilling to give in, I continued Christmas shopping without Zhu Zhus. A week before Christmas a neighbor told me Toys R Us was getting a shipment that night. I'm not standing in line in the freezing cold...with a prediction of snow...for some stupid toy she might not even like...Three hours, it WAS cold, the snow was only light...Hurray! I bought a four-pack of Zhu Zhus (the only thing you were allowed to get) and acted like I had just snagged a Jill St. John for twenty bucks.

Santa didn't bring them; I did. Hey, for all that work why should HE get the credit? I got a humongous hug and "Oh, thank you, Mommy!" Not ten minutes later a Zhu Zhu pet had firmly ensconced itself in her hair...yeh, there's a warning on the box about being careful with long hair...but how careful is a four year old going to be leaning forward while playing? We had to cut her hair to remove the pet...

Needless to say, enthusiasm waned, although we put her in a pony tail any time she wanted to play with the pets. They, their paraphenalia, and the memories are contentedly collecting dust on a closet shelf. Where, I suppose, they will remain until next year and, hopefully, serve as a reminder to me that "all crazes aren't what they're cracked up to be"...until...next...year...

ROFL! Your poor little girl!

I told my oldest that she wouldn't get it because I wouldn't pay that much for them and that after Christmas she could get one when the $$ go back down.

Luckily she is 10 and understands these things, we have been through her wanting the toy of the year before.

So she thought she wasn't getting one and then a friend of my husband's who doesn't have kids, found one at the regular price and sent it to us! So man, was she surprised on Christmas!!

Luckily G isn't old enough to want anything special for Christmas. She didn't "get" it last year, and I'm still not sure she'll really "get" it next year.

I had to LOL at you wanting the credit for the good gift, not Santa. I've heard a lot of parents say just that!

I'm not sure if I should be thankful that my kids are older and this really didn't affect us or I should cry because it would be so nice if the present of their dreams was only $8. iPod touches are much more than that, I assure you; however, we have not had to cut anyone's hair over the them at least.

My boys showed no interest in the creepy little toys whatsoever. I was thankful.

Emmy February 22, 2010 11:37 AM

Ouch! So not fun that her hair got caught. Luckily my kids haven't given into the latest fad toys yet.. :)

Carolee / Home4ever February 22, 2010 11:37 AM

I hate all those toy fads.

Arguments breakout and people get stampeded to death to aquire the must have "toy of the year", for their kid which generally keeps the kids attention for maybe a week!

So funny! The things we do for ten minutes of pleasure for our kids, right? I really hope my kids don't get caught up in any of that when they are older, but sadly, I am sure there is no escaping it.

Gucci Mama February 22, 2010 12:36 PM

Thankfully my kids were too young this year for these things. I couldn't believe the mania. Unfortunately, however, I can see these toy crazes in my future. My very near future.

Anti-Supermom February 22, 2010 12:53 PM

I can't believe that they can get caught in someone's hair - I had no idea... I personally think they are a bit on the creepy side, like those fake babies that people get to look like a real one.

Like *that* creepy.

I am so excited that we escaped this mania. Only problem is that older kids wants are more expensive.

Thanks for stopping by my blog

Our kids gifts this year were of the electronic variety. Even though they cost a lot more they still hold their interest.

Definately glad to have avoided this one. No more birthdays till Nov

Wow, maybe there is an upside to my kids growing up. I didn't have to saw any hair out of electronic furballs. Not this year, anyway.

aww poor thing (with the her hair). we wanted to get the zhu zhu pets for Christmas but weren't about to deal with all that craziness and I am apauled at the way people were on ebay that is just not right!
I was warned about the hair problem from a freind (because it happened to her daughter too) and I hope that when we give Brooke her zhu zhu's for her birthday we don't run into this problem, maybe we will start off with a ponytail.

Linda Medrano February 22, 2010 3:42 PM

I have short hair. I'm still getting one. How do you say zhu zhu? zoo zoo? I need to know what to ask for.

Mama Wheaton February 22, 2010 4:39 PM

I don't even know what a ZHu Zhu is? Did I miss out on something big again?

Cocotte February 22, 2010 4:45 PM

Yup. We've got a closet full of Beanie Babies and Crazy Bones to prove it.

Kiki February 22, 2010 5:01 PM

wow. so glad i didn't buy any zhu-zhus. i can only imagine all the dog hair i would be pulling off those wheels. i have a hard enough time doing it to Junior's remote control cars. since i commented yesterday on your post, i asked my sister about her daughter's zhu-zhus this morning and she said she still hasn't played with them since Christmas. take care.

JoeyRes February 22, 2010 5:03 PM

My daughter doesn't know what a Zhu Zhu pet is. I'm not sure how we dodged that bullet but we've never had to have a "must have" toy yet.

That sounds traumatic with the hair!

Unknown Mami February 22, 2010 5:28 PM

Wow, can't believe that hair had to be cut!

ModernMom February 22, 2010 5:30 PM

I think I should look at importing these babies to Canada! :)

Alyssa - Thanks so much for trying to vote. I think it stinks that people have to register anyway. It probably prevents a lot of people from voting! I really appreciate your support.

Kiki February 22, 2010 6:35 PM

thanks for your comment on my recent post. i checked my gmail to reply to you and it wouldn't let me and i can't find your email address in my contacts. so to answer you, yes, i took down a post b/c someone got upset by it and pretty much hurled accusations at me. i didn't want to deal with other readers getting offended so i removed the post. i emailed the commenter to explain myself, but have not gotten a response. it's okay, though. i made myself feel better by unfollowing her blog and on twitter. take care.

Susan Fobes February 22, 2010 6:41 PM

Neither my daughter nor my son even mentioned these on Christmas or any time after, so I was pretty thankful!

Kiki February 22, 2010 6:59 PM

thanks for last comment. i didn't know that about my email. do you suggest i fix that, or do you find it's better not to have it displayed? have a great evening and take care.

Lexie Loo & Dylan Too February 23, 2010 10:13 AM

Oh no! I just read your previous post before this one, and commented on the hair thing! Luckily, it wasn't my daughter's hair that was involved! Poor kiddo!
